Eyesi Indirect Ophthalmoscope SimulatorVR magic Indirect simulator

The Eyesi Indirect Ophthalmoscope simulator is an augmented reality simulator for training of retinal examinations. With a wide-ranging database of clinically relevant pathologies, the Eyesi Indirect Ophthalmoscope significantly extends the range of diagnostic training available to medical and optometry students today. By means of a case-oriented didactic approach, trainees are effectively prepared for clinical practice. The computer-based training system also provides immediate and objective evaluation of both procedural and diagnostic skills.

Augmented Reality for Realistic Training of Retinal Examination

The augmented reality technology integrated in the Eyesi Indirect Ophthalmoscope provides a highly realistic, three-dimensional experience of retinal examinations. At the same time students learn how to properly handle the ophthalmoscope. The Eyesi Indirect Ophthalmoscope simulator thus provides for most effective and activity-based knowledge transfer.
With the Eyesi Indirect Ophthalmoscope, students can examine a wide range of simulated clinically relevant cases before they meet their first real patient. All relevant pathologies for retina and vitreous are covered with a multitude of examples. Case descriptions and the clinical records of the virtual patient are provided by the training system.

Examination Skills

To begin the Eyesi Indirect Ophthalmoscope simulator offers abstract cases in which trainees have to find geometric objects that are placed on the retina. The level of difficulty rises as objects have to be found on the periphery of the retina.

The Anatomical Structures course offers a variety of healthy retinas of patients of different age and ethnicity. Examining the virtual patients, trainees will further hone their examinations skills and will get acquainted with different characteristics of healthy retinas. They will learn to identify anatomical structures and become familiar with anatomical directional terms.

Clinical Cases

The clinical cases of the Eyesi Indirect Ophthalmoscope simulator are modelled on the basis of real clinical cases and help trainees to develop clinical skills such as making diagnoses and therapeutic decisions. Clinical cases may have complicated pathologies that need to be differentiated against other possible diagnoses. Available pathologies range from macular degenerations and hereditary and diabetic disorders through to tumors in the chorioretinal complex.

Educational Guidance

The Eyesi Indirect Ophthalmoscope training system provides multiple-choice questions and medical background information to guide trainees in identifying the typical findings for a given pathology and choosing an appropriate treatment. Information on the virtual patient include patient history and referral causes. Trainees can call up additional case-relevant information and differential diagnoses.

Objective Assessment of Retinal Examinations

The Eyesi Indirect Ophthalmoscope simulator provides objective assessment and detailed evaluation of both procedural and diagnostic skills. At the end of each virtual retinal examination, the trainee is presented with a performance summary.
Several parameters of the examination procedure are scored by the Eyesi Indirect Ophthalmoscope training system, such as the time needed for examination and the percentage of the retina that has been examined properly.
The Eyesi Indirect Ophthalmoscope simulator provides a detailed evaluation of the given diagnosis for each retinal examination. The types and completeness of diagnostic findings are reviewed and the degree of exactness for positioning findings in the fundus editor is determined.
All performance data is stored in the Eyesi Indirect Ophthalmoscope database for further analysis by the educator. The documentation of diagnostic abilities over time allows educators to keep track of the individual learning curve.
